My Wedding Photography Style

Knowing how your wedding photographer will approach your day and having the clearest understanding of what they can create really puts your mind ease… so in this blog post I’m going to give you the ins and outs of what you can expect from me as your wedding photographer.
It’s important to start with how I got to where I am now as a photographer… I’ve always wanted to take portraits of people, I fell in love with photography by looking at the work of iconic photographers such as Richard Avedon and Alfred Stieglitz, then as my style developed I transitioned into fashion photography. By creating an extensive amount of fashion based work I was able to hone my technical skills and experiment creativity to figure out what I wanted to achieve as a photographer. I loved and still love creating fashion photography, however after working within the industry for multiple years I realised there was something missing for me, and that’s a deeper connection between people and photography. After photographing a wedding for a friend I realised I can take the types of photographs I find creatively fulfilling whilst witnessing and encapsulating an amazing connection between people.

My recent fashion work

One thing you should know about photography is that the photographers working approach has the most impact on your final photographs, more than the most expensive equipment or the post production could. The way we see your day or the way we work in collaboration with you on the day massively effects the quality and feel of the results you receive. I would describe my approach as subtle and elegant… I showcase the unique details, the flowers, the decor, the lace of the dress, I catch that quiet moment of you both when nobody else is looking and I keep posed portraits as unforced as possible. My passion lies largely in posed portraits, as fashion photography is my background, yet you can expect the focus to be on the connection between you both to celebrate your loving relationship rather than only concentrating on something for aesthetic reasons.

Following on from this you can trust that I understand what I need to do as a photographer to achieve the aesthetic style you see in my work. This comes by having developed a clear working process over time, meaning I know what equipment to use in various situations, how to work with natural light to ensure it’s flattering and I have in-depth knowledge of post-production which enables me to bring out the best qualities in the photographs from your day. You might notice that I like to make my photographs feel warm and inviting, I do this by enhancing tones of natural greenery and warm orange highlights in post-production. Although I won't force something into an image if it’s not already there naturally, if your day is crisp and minimal or simply doesn’t have the tones already in the image I will adjust my approach and edit to best suit your chosen setting and theme. I also like to work with contrast if the lighting is right, a lot of wedding photographers avoid darker shadows, whereas I feel as though I can make them work to create a more bold image with greater impact.

Finding your own style is one thing but it can only last so long without having a strong sense of why you do what you do. My why is very easy for me… the reason I’m a wedding photographer is happiness. To have the privilege to witness extreme bonds of happiness between families and loved ones for a career gives me a great sense of purpose and fulfilment in life. I have seen many sides to the photographic industry and have been lucky enough to work within it for multiple years, yet none have given me the same feeling as photographing a wedding. Providing an excellent level of customer service is also something I’m passionate about. As the world becomes more automated behind screens I feel proud knowing I have provided an high level of one on one customer service. Even though I’m still in the early stages of my career I can definitely say I’m fully prepared for the exciting journey ahead and can’t wait to spread a lot of creativity, joy and above all else weddings.
